McQueen label to become softer

28th September 2010

(Cover) - EN Fashion - Sarah Burton says her new collection for the McQueen label will have less angst.

The British designer was appointed creative director of the label in May, following the suicide of Alexander McQueen in February.

Sarah used to be Alexanders first in command, and she says she will try her best to continue his legacy in the new line, at the same time adding her own female stamp.

"I don't think it has to have as much angst in it. I think it will become softer," she told WWD.

"There will always be this McQueen spirit and essence. But, of course, I'm a woman so maybe more from a woman's point of view.

Sarah considers herself to be a lighter person than Alexander real name Lee - so she thinks the label will become less mysterious. However, she concedes the time she spent working with Alexander has rubbed off on her.

"There's always got to be some darkness, because otherwise you don't appreciate what's light," she explained. "I've had a training in darkness, but I don't feel that it's necessarily a personal thing to me. I'm a bit lighter."

She also added that she wants to make her collection unique, and wont be trying to emulate her predecessor. He was famous for his theatrical catwalk shows which often involved special effects.

"That was very much Lee's territory - the spectacular show. In that way, I can't try and pretend to be Lee," she said.

Sarahs debut solo collection for women will be unveiled on October 5. (C) Cover Media
