Oru Nadigayin Vaakumoolam Review

13th February 2012

Cast: Sonia Agarwal, Ganja Karuppu

Director: Raj Krishna

Rating: 2.5/5

Daring yet unimpressive...

'They stand under lights. But there are many dark secrets behind their growth.' Well, this popular perception about actresses forms the crux of Oru Nadigayin Vaakumoolam, directed by journalist turned filmmaker Rajkrishna.

This comeback film of Sonia Agarwal, though a daring attempt that takes a dig at some bitter practices in cinema industry, fails to impress thanks to a disjointed screenplay and a style of narration that doesn't kindle the interest in us.

If at all someone has to be appreciated, it is producer Punnagai Poo Geetha for backing a bold theme. And the director too deserves credit to a certain extent for trying his hand at a contrast movie.

Anjali (Sonia Agarwal), a popular actress, suddenly vanishes from the scene. A journalist (Punnagai Poo Geetha) goes in search of her and finds the whereabouts too. On digging, she unravels some bitter truths. Anjali is from Andhra Pradesh and she is the daughter of a poor artiste (Yogi Devaraj). Her mother vows to make Anjali an actress, and for that, she brings her to Chennai and goes from one studio to the other in search of opportunity. The young girl is no exception to the decade old 'practice'- that she has to agree for casting couch. She offers herself to greedy men and becomes a top actress. One fine day, she realises that the sole aim of her mother is to make money, Irked at this, she escapes from the clutches of her family.

Sonia Agarwal performs well, apparently understanding fully well that this film is going to be her visiting card in her second innings. There is nothing much to say about others in the cast.

Music is average. So is cinematography and other technical departments. Rajkrishna, who is capable of taking in hand a daring story, has failed in executing it an interesting manner.
