Peter Facinelli has filed for divorce from Jennie Garth citing "irreconcilable differences."

The couple had announced earlier this month that they had split after 11 years of marriage and three children together.

But the Twilight actor formally filed legal papers in Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday.

The documents state that Peter wants joint physical and legal custody of their three girls; Luca, 14, Lola, nine, and Fiona, five. Jennie has agreed to this.

Although it is reported that the couple's marriage had been on the rocks for some time, the date of separation is listed as January 1 2012.

Jennie filed a response to the divorce petition simultaneously and is requesting that her legal name be changed back from Facinelli to Garth.

"While we have decided to end our marriage, we both share the same deep love and devotion to our children," their earlier statement had read.

They also released another statement later denying reports that they had split due to infidelity in the marriage stemming from reports that Peter had been unfaithful.
