Ricky Gervais returns as Golden Globes host

17th November 2011

Ricky Gervais will be at the helm of the Golden Globe Awards next year, it has been confirmed.

The controversial funnyman will host the show on January 15 despite receiving lots of complaints that his remarks about fellow celebrities went too far last year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association met with NBC, who will be airing the ceremony, to decide on choosing the British actor again.

Ricky, 50, was reportedly unsure whether to host for the third year running but "gradually warmed to the idea" after meeting with HFPA president Dr. Aida Takla-O'Reilly in Paris, it is reported.

"While many welcome Gervais's return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters," a blog post on the HFPA website reads.

Last year Ricky introduced Bruce Willis as "Ashton Kutcher's dad" and said Robert Downey Jr would be known to the audience from "such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail."

Robert in return quipped that the show had been "hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones."
