Ron Howard: Distance is key to partnership

21st June 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - Ron Howard claims that his relationship with business partner Brian Grazer works because it is "bi-coastal".

The two filmmakers founded their company Imagine Entertainment 25 years ago and are currently in pre-production talks for their latest project, the adaptation of Steven King's seven novel series The Dark Tower.

Since setting up their company in 1986, the pair have reaped success in both the TV and movie industry with hits including 24 and the Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind.

"The bi-coastal relationship! Because I'm in New York, we're not forced to stare at each other's faces 24/7," Howard joked when asked how they have avoided falling out by American website Deadline. "But I think that's not really it. We love what we're doing, we have fun doing it and our sensibilities are in sync. In a business that can create so many feelings of anxiety and self-doubt, I learned to trust in that. Brian is smart and cares about me doing well and feeling good about what I'm doing. It's a partnership built on support. It has been that way since the beginning."

Brian added that their similar work ethic and vision for projects means that there are no major conflicts in their working relationship.

He said that they are both interested in the story of each movie, not necessarily what genre it is.

"It works because we have similar tastes and not only gravitate toward the same material but also what lives inside the core of the movie it becomes," he explained. "We've done, and Ron has directed, all kinds of genres. We have a common interest in the humanity aspect of a movie, regardless if it's a comedy or a drama. We also share a similar work ethic."
