(Cover) - EN Movies - Ryan Gosling will no longer be directing and starring in The Idolmaker, according to a report.

During the recent Cannes International Film Festival it was claimed that Ryan would be making his directorial debut on the project. He was also said to be planning to appear in front of the camera, although it now seems things have fallen through.

According to Deadline, the actor has told film studio MGM he's too busy for the project. He is set to start shooting A Place Beyond the Pines soon, after which he begins work on Gangster Squad alongside Sean Penn.

MGM apparently still think The Idolmaker could be a big hit, so plan to continue working on the release. It's thought they are hoping Ryan will come back to the picture when his schedule allows it.

The movie is a remake of the 1980 picture directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Ray Sharkey. It is based on the life of record executive Bob Marcucci, who looked after artists including Fabian and Frankie Avalon. (C) Cover Media
