Salman Khan hit-and-run case: Charges to be framed today

24th July 2013
It's D-Day for actor Salman Khan, who can possibly face charges for culpable homicide today for his 2002 hit-and-run case.

The actor had appealed for a retrial after the Magistrate Court charged him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. However, the court had rejected his plea at the last hearing on June 24.

If proven guilty, Salman could go to jail for 10 years.

Earlier, the 47-year-old actor had been charged with a lesser offence of causing death by rash and negligent driving, which would carry a maximum punishment of only two years in jail. But a magistrate's court enhanced it to a more serious culpable homicide charge in June.

In June, the session court had ruled that the actor should be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the case - a charge under IPC which attracts 10 years of imprisonment.

Eleven years ago in September 2002, Salman was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser when he ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident.
