Sinad O'Connor tried to commit suicide shortly before begging for psychiatric help on Twitter.

Yesterday, the Irish star posted messages on the social networking site in which she said she urgently needed attention.

She has now admitted she wanted help after trying to take her own life.

"I took an overdose," she told British newspaper The Sun. "God obviously wants me around though I can't think why."

Sinad tried to commit suicide last week while she was in America. She then came back to Ireland, where she lives in County Wicklow. The star had to go to hospital after breaking her ankle, and then tried to take her own life again.

The 45-year-old reached out for help using Twitter, but her desperate pleas had many people worrying for her mental health.

"i realise i will be in trouble 4 doing this but.. ireland is a VERY hard place to find help in. So having tried other ways 1st im asking does any1 know a psychiatrist in dublin or wicklow who could urgently see me today please? im really un-well... and in danger," she wrote.

Sinad recently hit the headlines after marrying her fourth husband Barry Herridge following a whirlwind romance. She then announced they were divorcing after just 16 days, but eventually revealed they are back together and happy.

The star explained reactions to her relationship were one of the reasons she was feeling unwell.

"the article about them trying to lose barry his job and every1 being s*** to him 4 marrying me has spun me off and im ill," she wrote. "and i desperately need to get back on meds today."

Several hours after her messages, Sinad was back on the site thanking people for their support. She received several numbers which were helpful to her and is now getting treatment.

"so me start meds for few weeks just they say to lift out of apres marital abuse of inoccent hubby by nasty ppl depression," she wrote. "hard if u see someone u love bein hurt cus of u is all.. fux self esteem.. which aint always massive for any of us.. anyway thank u all (sic)."

The star has further confirmed she is feeling better in an interview with USA Today. She has no regrets about using Twitter to get care, revealing staff at the hospital which helped her have thanked her for making her struggle public.

Sinad has attempted suicide in the past and has also been treated for bi-polar disorder.
