The Artist tops BAFTA nominations

17th January 2012

The Artist has been nominated for 12 BAFTA Awards.

The homage to silent movies was victorious at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night and seems set to repeat that performance.

Nominations for the BAFTAs were announced this morning, with The Artist leading the pack. The French film is in the running for the coveted best film prize, as is The Descendants, Drive, The Help and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Michel Hazanavicius is up for the best director gong, alongside Nicolas Winding Refn, Martin Scorsese, Tomas Alfredson and Lynne Ramsay.

The Artist's stars have also been praised for their roles, with Jean Dujardin in the running for best actor and Brnice Bejo nominated for the female version of the prize.

Others battling it out to be named best actor are Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, George Clooney and Michael Fassbender. For the women, either Brnice, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton or Viola Davis will triumph.

Other prizes The Artist could pick up include best original screenplay, best music, best editing and best costume design.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has also done well, scooping 11 nominations. Among those are best British film, best adapted screenplay and best production design.

Martin Scorsese's first foray into family films Hugo could take nine prizes, while My Week with Marilyn has six nominations and The Help and War Horse both managed five.

In two other big categories, either Christopher Plummer, Jim Broadbent, Jonah Hill, Kenneth Branagh or Philip Seymour Hoffman will be named best supporting actor.

For the women, Carey Mulligan, Jessica Chastain, Dame Judi Dench, Melissa McCarthy or Octavia Spencer could triumph.

The 2012 BAFTA Awards will be held at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden on February 12.
