Thor tops US box office

(Cover) - EN Movies - Thor stormed to the top of the US box office over the weekend, raking in $66 million.

The latest Marvel Comics superhero movie opened strongly in America, enjoying the third highest debut for a Marvel picture behind Spider-Man and Iron Man. Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, tells the story of the famed warrior cast out of the realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of the countrys powerful defenders.

The movie is directed by Kenneth Branagh and produced by Marvel Studios.

Fast Five, the fifth instalment of the Fast and the Furious franchise, fell to second place after taking in a respectable $32.5 million.

Romantic comedies Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed claimed third and fourth spots in the box office rankings, earning $13.7 million and $13.2 million respectively.

3D animated movie Rio which features the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg secured fifth spot after making $8.3 million. Romantic drama Water for Elephants, starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, slipped to sixth place with $5.6 million.

Mel Gibsons latest big screen outing, dark comedy The Beaver, failed to set the box office alight. The movie, which is directed by Jodie Foster, is estimated to have earned a disappointing $104,000 in its first limited release weekend. (C) Cover Media
