(Cover) - EN Fashion - Tom Ford says he doesnt understand the need for immediacy within the fashion industry.
After a six year break the fashion designer has created his first womenswear collection, although the much-anticipated line will not be previewed until December.
Tom thinks its wrong when clothes go on sale as soon as they have been previewed, and argues it will be much better for his Spring/Summer 2011 line to be revealed just a few months in advance.
"I don't get the need for this immediacy. In fact, I think it's bad," he told the British edition of Vogue magazine.
"The way the system works now, you see the clothes, within an hour or so they're online, the world sees them. They don't get to a store for six months. The next week, young celebrity girls are wearing them on red carpets. They're in every magazine.
Tom fears consumers will start to tire of constantly seeing clothes on the Internet and in the pages of fashion magazines before they have hit the shops, and thinks it could put them off making a purchase.
The customer is bored with those clothes by the time they get to the store. They're overexposed, you're tired of them, they've lost their freshness," he said.
Tom also explained his motivation for returning to womenswear, admitting a film starring the actress Tilda Swinton looking stylish had inspired him.
To tell you the truth, I was watching a film with Tilda Swinton - I'm not going to say which one and she had some good clothes," he confessed.
The designer is excited about the new collection and feels confident because he thinks it will bring something very unique and fun to the industry.
"It happened organically. I told myself I would not come back to women's until I felt I had something new to say, and I decided I'm only going to do it if I have fun. Which means I'm going to do it my way. If it's successful, great. If it's not, I'll close it. But I think it will be successful," he enthused. (C) Cover Media
