Wilde: Women should live in dignity

5th October 2012

Olivia Wilde is committed to ensuring that the basic needs of women around the world are met.

Olivia and several other female Hollywood icons including Eva Mendes, and Meg Ryan appear in a two-part PBS TV special entitled Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

Last year Olivia visited the Kibera School for Girls that the Shining Hope for Communities charitable institution runs in Kenya. The school is tuition-free and provides pupils with sanctuary from the horrors of Kenyan slums.

"This was the most extraordinary school I've ever seen," Olivia told People magazine. "I hope everyone will be as moved as I was and support this amazing organisation."

When Olivia witnessed a woman in Kenya receive a private toilet after years of falling victim to potential sexual assaults in public bathrooms, she was in awe of the gift's positive impact.

"[It] represents the fact that she does not have to live in fear that she can live with a certain amount of dignity," she said in the documentary.

Half the Sky aired on PBS in America October 1 and 2 and will be available for viewing online until October 8.
