(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Winona Ryder thought she was going to be great friends with Angelina Jolie.
The 39-year-old was an executive producer of the hit movie Girl, Interrupted, which was based on writer Susanna Kaysen's description of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital during the 1960s.
Angelina starred in the film, and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Lisa Rowe, launching her career and confirming her status as one of Hollywoods most talented women.
Winona has revealed she was adamant she wanted to cast Angelina, as she saw her incredible talent early on and was attracted to the stars aura, thinking they would connect well on a personal level.
She was the only person that I had in mind and obviously she was amazing, she won an Academy Award. I remember thinking, Oh, were going to turn out being great friends, Winona told Total Film.
As well as producing the movie, Winona also starred in it portraying Susanna Kaysen. For that reason, Winona thinks the actresses didnt bond as well as they could have, because they got so involved in the film and remained in character. Winona still has an immense respect for Angelina though, and felt upset by reports of a rivalry between the pair.
But I think she needed to be able to look at me as just Susanna, not as Winona, so in a very respectful way she just kind of kept her distance, she explained.
It was a little bit upsetting that the press and the reviews pitted her against me because I was thrilled for her, and I had a feeling she would win an award. (C) Cover Media
