(Cover) - EN Movies - X-Men: First Class has topped the US box office over the weekend.
The fifth instalment from the popular superhero franchise took $56 million after its release this weekend. Executives at 20th Century Fox, who released the movie, were thrilled with the comic book film's success.
"We are ecstatic," Chris Aronson said. "This was a complete reboot. We completely redid the cast. And it still was a hit."
The Matthew Vaughn-directed hit marks the fifth film in the franchise since director Bryan Singer introduced the comic-book adaptation, with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender among its cast.
The Hangover: Part II came in second place. The hugely-popular comedy earned $32.4 million, taking it to $188.9 million in ten days.
Kung Fu Panda 2 was third with $24.3 million, lifting its overall gross total to $100.4 million. The comedy animation, starring Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, is the sequel to the hit 2008 film.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which stars Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, was fourth with $18 million, while comedy Bridesmaids came fifth with $12.1 million. (C) Cover Media
