The legendary footwear designer is famously outspoken about what he thinks is ?vulgar? about the fashion industry. He doesn?t like designers who make an inflated profit on their creations and is also anti platform shoes. Fake breasts also upset him, and on the whole he thinks women should wear a heel in keeping with their height. That said, he is prepared to make an exception.

?I love enormous Amazonian girls in heels because the end of the limbs is right,? he explained. ?I wish more women would understand a flat can be so elegant. Bondage is fun, but only if it?s satirical and frivolous.?

Despite the ongoing global financial crisis, shoes have remained popular with women the world over. Manolo can understand why, explaining they are a thing of beauty which can be enjoyed even when they aren?t being worn.

?It?s because a dress often has no hanger appeal. You have to wear it to make it OK. But a shoe - it even works on a table. Sometimes it?s best on a table,? he told British newspaper The Times. ?I have to see it on a leg, unfortunately, otherwise it?s meaningless. And not just a thin, perfect leg. I mean I like thin, but not anorexic like some of those New York ladies.

?Where was I? Oh yes, compared with other pieces of clothing, a shoe?s not so expensive. A couture dress can cost ten, 20, who knows how many thousand??

Manolo?s shoes have been worn by stars including Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston. He believes they are popular because they are so sexy, which he explains is ironic.

?Sex is not, never was and never will be my priority,? he laughed. ?It?s in my shoes because that?s the only expression I have. I must be really one of the weirdest people in the world in the respect that I don?t need it. Maybe it?s evaporated for medical reasons or whatever.? (C) Cover Media
