(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Amanda Seyfried says Red Riding Hood is a big deal.

The 25-year-old American actress who is best known for her roles in Dear John, and Mamma Mia! - can soon be seen in the upcoming dark fantasy film. She plays a young girl, Valerie, who upsets her family by falling for an orphaned woodcutter. The film which is based on one of the best-loved fairytales - is set in a medieval village that is terrorised by a werewolf and is directed by Catherine Hardwicke.

The stunning star always wanted to appear in a period film and when she landed the coveted role of Red Riding Hood it surpassed her wildest dreams.

This is such a big deal for me. Ive always wanted to do a period piece, and this was way beyond my expectations. The vision was so full of romance and tension and mystery. There are so many things you can do with this story, she told The Telegraph.

Amanda was excited to draw on another dimension of the classic fairytale, and loved putting back all the sexual symbolism into the film. The blonde beauty insists that audiences will be thrilled with the adaptation because it has a more dangerous appeal.

Its important to add other elements and to introduce a thriller aspect to give the audience more. The original stories were the just the basis, she explained. Our movie is geared for young adults and is more along the lines of the Grimms version, with all the sexual tension, suspicion and terror. Theres a lot of sexual symbolism, and over the years its been extracted. And then we kind of put it back in. Not in the same way, though.

Amanda is spending time in London to promote the film, and is happy to go to the country even though her ex-beau Dominic Cooper resides there. Amanda met the British actor while shooting 2008 movie Mamma Mia! and they began dating a short while later, although they have since broken up.

Im not taking anything to London. Its going to be a good trip and Im not apprehensive about going back. I miss it so much, and anyway hes not going to be there. Hes away shooting, although we are very much in touch, she said. Im going to be having a bit of break after the trip to London, and Im happy. Things are looking good right now. (C) Cover Media
