Big B calls Sunil Dutt the 'Angry Young Man'

7th March 2013

When we hear the tag of 'Angry Young Man', a lanky image of superstar Amitabh Bachchan is immediately formed in our minds.

Courtesy his hot-blooded avatar in films like 'Zanjeer', 'Sholay', 'Namak Haraam', so on and so forth, Amitabh earned the 'Angry Young Man' title in the peak years of his career.

But the man himself feels that according to him it originally belongs to late actor Sunil Dutt who initiated the trend onscreen.

"Namak Haram bore seeds of the anger that was next seen in 'Zanjeer' and the subsequent titling of the epithet 'Angry Young Man' by the media. But I have always believed that the first powerful depiction or in a sense the birth of the so called 'Angry Young Man', was designed by Mehboob Saheb (Mehboob Khan) in 'Mother India', where the character Birju, played so brilliantly by Sunil Dutt, was depicted," he wrote on his microblogging site about Sunil Dutt.

The late actor made 'Birju's' character eternal amongst the Bollywood fans through his stellar performance in 'Mother India' that released in 1957.
