Brooke Mueller has "voluntarily decided to stay in rehab" for the first time ever.
The troubled ex-wife of actor Charlie Sheen was arrested for cocaine possession in Aspen, Colorado in December.
Brooke checked into a long-term rehabilitation facility in response to the arrest.
Loved ones are elated with how Brooke, who has unsuccessfully visited rehab in previous years, is coping with treatment this time around.
"This is a dramatic turn of events for Brooke as this is the first time she has ever voluntarily decided to stay in rehab," a source told Radar Online. "This programme she is in is working, and Brooke is getting sober for herself, and that is the first time she has ever said that. In the past, family, friends have forced her into rehab, but not this time. Brooke is taking an active role in her sobriety."
Brooke has had it with being chemically dependent on anything, including cigarettes. She wants to feel vigorous again.
"Brooke quit smoking on her own, she doesn't want to do anything unhealthy to herself anymore," the source continued. "Her treatment team is so impressed with her accomplishments. Brooke has said instead of smoking cigarettes, she will take vitamins!"
Brooke is expected to remain in treatment until February.
She has been in rehab for over a month and a half.
