Brooke Shields recalls dog trauma'

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Brooke Shields and her family continue to cope with the "sad" death of their beloved dog.

Brooke's American Bulldog Darla passed away from cancer two months ago. The actress and mother of two small children, daughters Rowan, eight and Grier, five, is still going through the grieving process.

Brooke raised Darla since the bulldog was a pup and she misses her animal immensely.

"It's very sad, actually," Brooke told People magazine. "We're all in that sort of trauma where we have her ashes and the girls [Rowan and Grier] carry these little footprints of hers around. She was the only dog we've really ever had."

Brooke believes the late Darla had incredible insight. The dog knew Brooke was expecting before the actress was aware of it.

"[Darla] knew I was pregnant before I even knew I was pregnant," she recalled. "She would circle me and not let me walk anywhere, I was going, 'God, what are you doing, get out from under my feet!' And that afternoon I found out."

Darla is irreplaceable to Brooke. She is finding it difficult to adopt a new animal into the family.

"[My daughters and I] walk to school everyday and they see all these different dogs, we're kind of [thinking about] what way do we want to go," Brooke said. "We'll probably never get another bulldog. We would just constantly be going, 'That's not Darla.'"

Brooke stars in teen film The Greening of Whitney Brown opposite a horse named Odd Job Bob. The actress hopes that her children will be able to relate to the film in the midst of their mourning.

"They're going to love it. Anything with horses and animals, they think it's so funny."

The Greening of Whitney Brown, which chronicles a spoil city kid's forced move to a country farm, will premiere in US theatres this weekend. (C) Cover Media
