Demi Moore "knows she's safe" when she spends time with her buddy Eric Buterbaugh.

The 49-year-old actress and the florist have been friends for several years.

Demi, who recently completed a stint in rehab after being hospitalised for "exhaustion", is deeply appreciative of Eric's support during this difficult period in her life.

"She knows she's safe when she's with him," a source told People magazine. "He has been a great friend of Demi's forever."

Demi's bond with her homosexual friend is profound. At times the actress considers Eric to be more of a sibling than a confidante.

"He loves her like a sister and he treats her like gold," the source added. "He's like a gay husband."

When Demi's spirits are low, Eric always finds a way to brighten her mood.

"He always tells her how beautiful she is," the source said. "Eric loves Demi unconditionally, and they have a lot of fun together. He makes her laugh."

Demi arrived back in Los Angeles this week after checking out of her rehabilitation centre and briefly vacationing in the Caribbean.
