Harry Potter enjoys magical box office weekend

18th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - The final Harry Potter movie conjured up a record breaking opening weekend at the US box office, taking nearly $170 million.

The staggering figure means Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has enjoyed the most successful box office debut in history, seeing off 2008's The Dark Knight. While Harry Potter has now ended the series with a bang, the box office baton could still be handed back to Christopher Nolan's Batman series when the final instalment, The Dark Knight Rises, is released next summer.

While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 enjoyed the best box office debut of all time, in actual fact it was seen by less cinemagoers than those who watched The Dark Knight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in the opening weekend, reports Box Office Mojo. However, the increased ticket prices of 3D showings has worked to the advantage of the final Harry Potter epic.

Elsewhere at the US box office, Transformers: Dark of the Moon dropped to second place after earning $21 million, while the rest of the top five were dominated by comedies Horrible Bosses, Zookeeper and Cars 2.

The biggest disappointment was Disney's Winnie the Pooh, which could only debut in at sixth place. (C) Cover Media
