The American actor has received critical acclaim for his roles in Zombieland and The Social Network, for which he won a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Despite his success, the 27-year-old doesn't like to watch films on the big screen unless he can identify with the characters.

"I don't go to the movies. I don't really like movies unless they're about people like me, about their cultures and neuroses and self-indulgence and self loathing," he told Empire magazine.

"So I guess in a way, movies are just a way to further my own narcissism."

Jesse struggled with his acting career five years ago.

The star had to deal with bad reviews and intense competition for parts. He empathises with other actors who have not yet reached the breakthrough point of their career.

"You do movies that you really believe in and they get terrible reviews and open in tiny theatres," he said.

"I feel bad for the people involved because for me, I have other movies that year, but for some of them that might be their only movie." (C) Cover Media
