Jim Broadbent: Hollywood movies are unsatisfying

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Jim Broadbent thinks Hollywood movies are often unsatisfying.

The British actor loves taking on different kinds of roles, which explains why his back catalogue is so eclectic. He has appeared in the Harry Potter and Bridget Jones movies, as well as in Gangs of New York and Iris. He is particularly passionate about making television series and films in the UK, as he thinks they offer something fresher than US productions.

In Hollywood films everything is tidied up at the end with clean lines and clean character definitions. Its sort of unsatisfying, he said. You see some wonderful Hollywood films that just sell out in the last ten minutes, which is so frustrating. Still, we have other problems, and one of them is trying to please American audiences with a sort of pastel version of those same films.

Its getting under the skin of different characters that the 61-year-old finds enthralling. He cant explain why he loves it, but thinks it must just be in his blood.

That said, Jim is less interested in the celebrity side of things. He is actually quite shy, so is glad he doesnt get bothered too much by fans. He is sometimes recognised when hes out and about, but usually people mistake him for someone else once for a policeman.

Its funny because I used to enjoy performing and would even force my way to the front, but in life, not so much. Its a different thing somehow, he told British newspaper The Daily Telegraph. I dont really understand it myself. Ive never been an extrovert in daily life.

Jim was born in Lincoln and had a twin sister who died at birth. He doesnt know how much it affected him as hes never felt grief, although his parents told him he cried when he was a baby and he now thinks he might have been missing his sister.

Whats funny is that I never had any sort of grief. There are societies you can join and 'share your pain now, but what would you talk about? I suppose you could join one of those groups and all weep together, he said. (C) Cover Media
