Joan Collins: Perry and Brand were doomed

10th January 2012

Joan Collins says Katy Perry and Russell Brand's split was "written in the gods".

Russell recently filed for divorce from Katy after 14 months of marriage. Rumours the pair weren't getting on were rife for months before their split was officially announced.

Joan is no stranger to marital issues and has tied the knot five times. The iconic actress believes Katy and Perry's union was doomed from the start.

"Sad? It was written in the gods!" she exclaimed in an interview with the British edition of OK! magazine. "I don't know either of them. It was sad about Demi [Moore] and Ashton [Kutcher] though. Two actors together can be difficult.

"I was engaged to Warren Beatty but I was more famous than him at the time. The ego can be in play with actors, particularly when you are young."

Joan was referring to Demi's difficult year in 2011, which culminated in her decision to divorce Ashton Kutcher following allegations he was unfaithful on their sixth wedding anniversary.

Joan believes young women should pave their own futures, and not have to rely on a man in their lives to do so. The 78-year-old feels saddened that young girls aspire to marry rich athletes and become reality TV stars.

"It depresses me a little," she sighed. "It's kind of tacky. Why are these girls not wanting to be actors or lawyers or doctors or scientists? It's really sad.

"People's ambition is just to be a reality star. How long is that going to last?"
