Joaquin Phoenix apologises to Letterman

23rd September 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Joaquin Phoenix has apologised to US talk show host David Letterman for his shambolic appearance on his show last year.

Joaquin is currently promoting his new film Im Still Here, which is directed by Casey Affleck. He was shooting it when he appeared on Davids programme in February last year. At the time, he and Casey insisted it was a documentary following Joaquins decision to ditch acting in favour of a rap career. Joaquin appeared in public with a bushy beard and in a confused state, and last week Casey admitted the movie is a hoax.

When he was interviewed by Letterman, Joaquin was bewildered and monosyllabic. He sucked on chewing gum throughout the interview, and didnt answer many of the questions. The scenes are a key part of Im Still Here, and last night Joaquin returned to the programme to discuss them.

Yeah, but, I mean, I think that youve interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person, he told David. But I apologise. I hope I didnt offend you in any way.

David quickly replied: Oh, no, no, no, I was not offended. Im telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger.

The talk show host then asked Joaquin to clarify he hadnt known what was happening during the interview. There have been rumours David was part of the ruse, and even that the pair had a script worked out, but Joaquin insisted they are untrue.

The actor explained he and Casey wanted to comment on modern celebrity in the movie. I got the idea from watching a lot of reality shows. I was amazed people believed them The acting was terrible, he explained.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed Joaquin is being lined up to play Clyde Tolson in Clint Eastwoods new movie Hoover. Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Clyde was alleged Hoovers lover.

Phoenix is expected to receive the offer to play Tolson as soon as DiCaprios deal closes, a source told X17 Online. (C) Cover Media
