(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Lindsay Lohan has turned herself in for house arrest.

The 24-year-old star began her confinement on Thursday morning at her California mansion, after turning herself in to the Lynwood Jail just hours earlier.

The American actress was convicted of theft after pleading no contest to stealing a $2,500 necklace, and was given four months in jail.

Despite her sentence, the troubled star was eligible for house arrest because of jail overcrowding issues.

L.A. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore has confirmed the star's house arrest.

"She is now confined to the interior premises of her home at all times," he told People.

Lindsay surrendered to the jail at 5:02 am where she was fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet and released in under an hour.

The actress could serve roughly two weeks of the house arrest due to good behaviour and budgetary constraints.

Lindsay is also serving 480 hours of community service at a women's shelter. (C) Cover Media
