Mark Wahlberg released a statement today saying it was "ridiculous" that he speculated about the September 11 tragedy.

The actor had claimed that had he been onboard one of the hijacked planes during the terror attacks, he would have been able to stop it from happening.

But now Mark has backtracked from his interview in Men's Journal and has said sorry for the "insensitive" comments.

"To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible," he said.

"I deeply apologise to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention."

Mark had actually been booked on Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles but changed his ticket at the last moment to instead go to the Toronto Film Festival.

That American Airlines plane carrying 92 passengers was the first to hit the World Trade Center in 2001.

"If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did," Mark told the publication.

"There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and me saying, OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry.'"
