(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Martin Sheen says his son Charlie is emotionally crippled because of his addiction.
Charlie has sparked fears for his mental wellbeing over recent months. He received hospital treatment after reportedly partying with porn stars and then agreed to have rehab treatment at home. As his care programme went on he began to give bizarre interviews, in which he slammed those involved with his show Two and a Half Men and criticised Martin for saying he had a disease. His comments caused outrage and he was sacked from the hit show, prompting him to file a lawsuit claiming there was no reason to let him go.
Martin has been continually asked about Charlie over the last few months and admits he worries about him deeply. He blames his sons behaviour on his alleged addiction to drugs, even though Charlie has repeatedly insisted he is clean.
Addiction is the dark side. Its a reflection of despair. Every now and then [he listens to me]. Depends on whether its a moment of clarity for him. You know, Charlies 45 years old. Hes not a kid. Emotionally he still is. Because when youre addicted, you dont grow emotionally. So when you get clean and sober youre starting at the moment you started using drugs or alcohol. Youre emotionally crippled, Martin told British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.
But I know what hell hes living in. Ive had psychotic episodes in public. One of them was on camera the opening scene of Apocalypse Now. So I know what Charlie is going through. And when you do something like that, that is out of control, thats the most difficult thing. You have to have courage.
Martin is currently promoting his new movie The Way, which was directed by his son Emilio Estevez. Martin plays Tom, who goes to France to collect his son who passed away while completing the iconic Camino de Santiago walk, from France to Spain.
Charlie and Emilio, 48, have two other siblings Ramn and Rene. They are all in the film industry and Emilio finds it hard to understand why his brothers life is so different to the rest of the familys.
[We were] raised under the same roof. We all had the same set of rules, he explained in the same interview.
So it really gives credence to this theory that it is genetic, and that sometimes it skips either a generation or siblings. My mother doesnt drink. My other brother hasnt had a drink in over ten years, my dad hasnt had a drink in 20. And I make wine.
Charlie has previously slammed his father for commenting about his personal issues. Martin gave an interview in which he likened addiction to cancer, which Charlie publicly rubbished. (C) Cover Media
