Nanban becomes tax-free

14th January 2012

Vijay’s and Shankar directed  film "Nanban" is exempted from entertainment tax in Tamil Nadu.

It is the first film to get the benefit under a new scheme introduced by the Jayalalithaa government.

The state government had constituted a panel comprising of 22 personalities drawn from various wings of the film industry, to recommend films eligible for  entertainment tax exemption.

The 22 non-official members include directors, actors, producers, music directors and playback singers. Four of them will join on rotation basis, three officials to form a seven member committee that will view films and recommend tax exemption.

The films chosen should have a ‘U’ censor certificate from the regional censors and should keep within Tamil culture and sensibility.

A fee of Rs 10,000 will be charged to apply for exemption.

It is a major boost to the big budget "Nanban" box-office collections, as they will not have to pay the 30% entertainment tax.  All is well that ends well.
