Nicki Minaj: Women should be assertive

29th November 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Nicki Minaj is angry that assertiveness is considered negative and unattractive in women in the music industry.

The female rapper recently released her debut album Pink Friday, and has also starred in a documentary called My Time Now, shown on MTV. The programme gives a behind-the-scenes-look into how the much-anticipated album was recorded.

In it, the 25-year-old speaks of the sexism that is still rife in the music industry and the double standards which are imposed on women but not men.

"When I am assertive, I'm a b***h. When a man is assertive, he's a boss. He bossed up. No negative connotation behind bossed up. But lots of negative connotation behind being a b***h," she revealed.

The pink-haired star also described how creating a rap track is an organic process that cannot be forced.

If Nicki tries to over-think what she is writing and doesnt use her natural instincts, the song can often get destroyed.

"When I write a rap, like, my brain doesn't compute, 'Now write rap.' It doesn't. You just have to let it happen and just don't second-guess yourself too much and then it gets done," she divulged. "To me, music is spiritual, so it moves you in a weird way that you cannot teach in school. I'll hear a beat and words just start coming to me." (C) Cover Media
