Cop on top

Police stories always come with a charm. It is even more true when people like R Parthiban venture into such genres. So Vithagan managed to garner a lot of attention right from the day it was announced. Adding to the hype is the fact that Vithagan is the actor-director's 50th film. So, what are we trying to convey? Well, if you go to cinema halls to watch Vithagan with all the above said things in mind, hold on, the film may not impress you. Expectations, as they say, could leave you disappointed. But when you go to the theatre without any pre-conceived notion, Vithagan will entertain you, at least till interval. And credits should be given to Parthiban for that, for he has donned too many hats, from script to acting to direction.

The film revolves around Rowthiran (Parthiban), an honest police officer, who wants to serve the society. Though he faces hiccups in his job, life is smooth for him and he falls for Mary (Poorna), a chirpy girl. Life takes a wild turn for Rowthiran when he has to cross swords with a deadly baddie (Milind Soman) and his gang. How the police official puts an end to their menace with his brainy and brawny ways is the rest of the story.

Though the film seems a little slow in the beginning the second half picks up pace. All the credit for making it presentable goes to Parthiban who has kept a strict watch on the intricate details of the film. He makes it entertaining and watchable.

Parthiban is tailor-made to the role of a police officer, as he is known for his intelligence in real life too. As Rowthiran, he steals the show. Poorna is beautiful and performs well.Milind Soman with the help of Gautham Vasudev Menon's dubbing instills fear.

Joshua Sridhar of Kaadhal fame makes a comeback with Vithagan, but his songs are average. However, the composer excels in background score. Cinematography and editing by Antony make their presence felt in songs and stunt sequences.

Parthiban, who has apparently spent all his energy in shaping up the first half itself, fails to score runs in the post-interval session. A lot of logical loopholes, violence and other things mar the flow in the second half. But still, Vithagan is impressive, so to speak.
