(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Annie Lennox has called on women to galvanise to ensure they achieve equality.
The singer is renowned for her work for good causes, and is currently raising awareness of International Womens Day today. The event aims to celebrate female achievements in the spheres of economics, politics and social changes, and to show there is still much to be done to improve the lives of females worldwide.
People will be marking the day across the world, with 400 events planned in the UK alone. Annie wants women the world over to know about the date and hopes it will help them strive for something better.
I think there is so much still to be done. Women have become accustomed to the benefits weve received, the inheritance from our great-grandmothers whove fought to give us freedoms in the suffragette movement and we tend to take these things for granted, she said. There is so much still to do. The idea of today being 100th anniversary of womens day, we really need to galvanise and focus on the fact theres still so much disparity and still so much to be done before were anywhere near equal.
Annie has travelled to many developing countries for her charity work, which is one of the main reasons she wants to promote International Womens Day. While in countries like the US and British females can do the same jobs as men, in many other areas this isnt the case. Thats not to say Annie is happy about so-called developed countries though, as she thinks they still have a long way to go too.
If you look at women representatives in parliament in terms of how much money we have, our earning power, the disparity is so huge, she told Sky News. This is a very serious issue and its unfortunate in a way that the word feminism has been devalued in a sense, its very important.
Many stars are supporting the event, among them Daniel Craig. He has dressed as a woman in a video drawing attention to the special day, which Annie thinks is phenomenal.
He is James Bond, the ultimate macho man, known to everyone across the world, but is presenting himself as a woman. Its a lovely tool, she enthused. (C) Cover Media
