Blige crushed' by fast food ad controversy

28th June 2012

Mary J Blige admits that the backlash from a Burger King commercial she appeared in "hurt her feelings."

The R&B superstar sang about a chicken sandwich in an advertisement for the international fast food chain.

When the ad was released in April Mary received criticism from audiences who claimed that the singer fed into Black American stereotypes by singing about chicken.

Mary was stunned by the controversy.

"I had to go to the airport the next day, when it was hot off the press, and I just held my head up," she told New York radio station Hot 97 in an interview Thursday.

"It was a mistake and I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that. No one had mercy, and it's cool, it was a learning experience. It hurt my feelings, it crushed me for two days, but after those two days, I got up and I kept going. I want to apologise to everyone that was offended or thought I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposely."
