Daryl Hannah arrested after pipeline protest

5th October 2012

Daryl Hannah has been arrested for protesting over the construction of an oil pipeline.

The Splash actress was taken into custody in Winnsboro, Texas, on Thursday after demonstrating against the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, used to bring crude oil from Canada to America's Gulf Coast.

A 78-year-old woman was also arrested with the star.

"They've arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother," Daryl's manager Paul Bassis told The Associated Press.

Daryl, 51, was standing with Eleanor Fairchild in front of heavy machinery in attempt to halt construction of the pipeline on Eleanor's farm.

The women were arrested for criminal trespassing and were taken to the Wood County Jail, where they were expected to be held overnight.

It's not the first time the actress has spoken out against the construction of the $7 billion TransCanada pipeline.

The Kill Bill actress was one of several activists arrested in August 2011 for protesting in Washington.

Construction of the Keystone XL began this summer.

The pipeline is designed to bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries along the Texas coast.

Daryl has argued its construction could lead to a life-threatening oil spill or air contamination.

A spokesman for TransCanada refutes the claims.

"It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property," company spokesman David Dodson said.
