Florence Welch: Morbidity inspires me

31st October 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Florence Welch is "obsessed" with Jack the Ripper.

Florence and the Machine's new album Ceremonials will be released this week. The 25-year-old singer found macabre subjects deeply inspirational while recording this record.

"I am obsessed with the whole Victoriana thing," told USA Today. "The whole Jack the Ripper London era, the greyness of it, the haunted feeling of it, all ancient and bloody."

Florence appreciates the shock value of that dark era. She wanted to encapsulate the mood of this period into sound.

"It's good to frighten people," Florence explained. "I wanted to make an album that sounded like the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's [1996 film] Romeo + Juliet, the violence mixed with the classical Shakespearean drama mixed with the pop and the pulp, extreme neon stuff."

Murder is not something that Florence supports. She is more interested in the emotional depth of disturbing scenarios.

"Oh, and the violence [of the era]. Mmm. The word itself I'm obsessed with," Florence reflected. "I wanted to call this whole record just Violence. A violent emotion. You can feel things violently. It's a beautiful word. I'm such a non-violent person, too. I keep so much inside. I'm the least aggressive person ever. I can't argue."

Composing songs is a powerful emotional release for Florence. She is able to get burdensome emotions off her chest when she sings.

"Music is my way out. I keep things locked up and never say anything," Florence said. "I guess in order to say something to one person, I have to sing it to a couple of thousand. It doesn't make for healthy relationships."

Ceremonials will be released worldwide on November 1. (C) Cover Media
