Sujoy Ghosh made a smashing directorial debut with 'Jhankaar Beats' in 2003, but his later projects that is 'Home Delivery' and 'Aladin' bombed at the box office. It was only in 2012, that Ghosh tasted success with 'Kahaani' starring Vidya Balan, which not only managed to get big bucks at the box office, but also gained critical acclaim.
In the world of remakes and sequels, it did not come as a surprise when we learned that the makers of 'Kahaani' were planning a sequel to the superhit thriller. It was certainly good news for the fans, who were eagerly awaiting news on the sequel. However, the latest news on the sequel has certainly come as a shocker for the fans and the Bollywood fraternity, as it has hit a major roadblock.
Based on insiders, director Ghosh has sent a letter to Jayantilal Gada of PEN India and co-producer of 'Kahaani'. He has demanded that he be the sole producer of the sequel, and has accordingly asked for an exorbitant sum of 35 crores for the same. This includes 28 crores for the making of the film in addition to his fees and 7 crores as part of the publicity budget.
Ghosh did not stop there, as in addition to demanding advance payouts at various milestones of the project, he has also demanded that he own the music and satellite rights for the movie.
The director did not directly confirm the news, but he did share that he has presented PEN India with the offer to make the film, and if they do not accept it then, he would have to explore other options for the sequel.
Gada of PEN India lashed back, stating that Sujoy does not have the rights to make the sequel without their consent. Gada also shared that he had demanded Ghosh to send an official letter confirming that Vidya is on board for the sequel, along with the details on the budget that he is demanding and the final script of the sequel.
Guess time has changed as Ghosh wants to ensure that he makes the best with the sequel as he is riding high on success.
Let's hope the 'Kahaani' team can come to terms for the sequel, as fans would love to see 'Kahaani 2'.
