Kanye West: Making Runaway was very tough

21st October 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Kanye West has admitted he was out of his depth while making his ambitious new short film.

The extended music video Runaway tells the touching story of a phoenix who is brought back to life through the American stars music and then leaves him again once she is strong enough.

The 33-year-old rapper has compared the visual display to his earlier video Flashing Lights and admitted the colours, lighting and shooting of the short movie goes against the grain.

"Look at it graphically, how it starts," he said to MTV News. "With the car, the orange sky, the color palettes, the blue sky, the car pulling up with the orange headlights. And just the beautiful women, taking the Helmut Newton type photo and bringing it to real life and crashing it against Jim Henson and George Lucas type whimsy and taking, like, a [Federico] Fellini, [Stanley] Kubrick pacing and a very graphic novel/ comic book type setup on all the shots. There's a lot of shots that are borderline illegal for a film student. It just breaks rules, because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing."

Kanye had a controversial spotlight shone on him at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), when he leapt on stage as Taylor Swift accepted the Best Female Video prize and claimed it should have gone to Beyonc Knowles.

The Runaway video is the first major piece of work Kanye has emerged with following the outburst, however it is not his favorite creation to date.

Even though the Flashing Lights project in 2008 holds similarities with Runaway, he still prefers the former, and he promises that his work on the project is not over yet.

Flashing Lights is my favorite piece of work that I've done, he said. The pacing, people are always like, 'Where is the rest of it?' But we didn't have the time or whatever or the money to do the rest of it. But I might do the rest of it, the beginning and the end. Two years from now, I might give you the whole Flashing Lights video, put I Wonder in it, Say You Will and songs that I feel like doing."

Fellow American musician Pete Wentz has described Kanyes Runaway video as the single most ambitious music video of the decade. (C) Cover Media
