(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Katy Perry is "speechless/nervous/turned on" about receiving nine MTV Video Music Award (VMA) nominations.
The pop star discovered the good news when MTV's VJ Sway visited her on the Seattle leg of her ongoing California Dreams tour. Katy has received nods in a host of categories including Best Pop Video, Best Special Effects, Best Female and Best Video of the Year for the huge hit Firework.
The talented star joked that she thought her nine nods were a "typo" upon hearing the news, and later took to Twitter to express her joy.
"OMG! I just got word that I'm nominated for 9 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS!!! I'm kinda speechless/nervous/turned on! NOW it's up to YOU to VOTE (sic)!" wrote Katy.
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are due to take place on August 28, and will air live from Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre. Other big names in the running for gongs on the big night include Adele, Beyonc Knowles, Lady Gaga and rising star Nicki Minaj.
Adele wasn't far behind Katy in terms of nominations. The British soul singer received seven, including Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.
In terms of male artists, Kanye West earned an impressive seven nods, including Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video.
Bruno Mars gained four nominations, among them Video of the Year, Best Pop Video and Best Male Video for his smash Grenade.
Beyonc, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj were just behind with mentions in three categories each. The trio will go head to head in the Best Female Video category, Nicki for Super Bass, Gaga for Born This Way and Beyonc for Run the World (Girls).
