Lucy Liu: I love a challenge

27th October 2012

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Lucy Liu was attracted to new Sherlock Holmes adaptation Elementary as she loves challenging the status quo.

The actress plays Sherlock Holmes' aide in the series.

This is the first time the famous detective series has been reworked by casting a woman as Watson.

"I love the idea of turning things on their head a little bit," Lucy revealed to British magazine Grazia.

"Not just because I am a woman, but because I am an Asian-American actress as well. And I think it shows how far we've come. I don't think, even five years ago, you would have had a female Asian-American playing Watson on a prime time show."

Lucy, who starred in Charlie's Angels and Ally McBeal, joked the gender of Watson is the main change to the well-known stories.

She explained it is unlikely that any romance will develop between her character Dr Joan Watson and Sherlock, who is played by Johnny Lee Miller, as it would upset fans too much.

"They already changed the gender of Watson," Lucy laughed. "If she and Sherlock had a relationship, fans would probably set fire to our set!" (C) Cover Media
