Rock of Ages: A spoof of 80's rock culture
The film opens on a fresh-faced wannabe rock chick Sherrie (Julianne Hough), coming to LA and meeting Drew (Diego Boneta), whose dream is to become a stadium god. Romance flourishes and well-known rock anthem of the 80's are adoringly belted out, as they both get jobs of waiters at the legendary club "The Burobon", which is hosting a gigantic farewell gig for superstar Stacey Jaxx(Tom Cruise). Stacey Jaxx literally makes women faint, presumably modeled on the likes of Axl Rose, Steven Tyler and Jon Bon Jovi. Heavily tattooed and valiantly egocentric with a monkey for a pet and a dragon’s head codpiece for his leather pants, Cruise's character makes the man so amusing to observe. The Superstar Stacy Jaxx is pursued by Rolling Stone reporter Constance Sack (Malin Akerman). Patricia Whitmore (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is a conservative campaigner, demanding to shut down the sinful club, to the dismay of its owner Dennis (Alec Baldwin) and his talkative assistant Lonny (Russell Brand).
Leather clad, women and whisky are present whenever he’s on screen, Tom Cruise proves he still got the swagger with his gripping performance, who is completely detached from reality and the fact that his immodest manager (Paul Giamatti) has got him on track. Catherine Zeta-Jones puts up a fine performance with her two faced-vicious character. Baldwin and Brand's character makes the film more entertaining to watch. Moreover, Boneta and Hough branch out the suitable charm to their character as well and Mary J. Blige’s character enhances the film with her profound voice.
The film ardently directed by Adam Shankman, the maker of musical Hairspray and written by play writer Chris D'Arienzo with Justin Theoroux and Allan Leob delivers another musical great if not classic. The movie Rock of Ages adds stirring characters and performances with pleasing screenplay while the core of the film remains the same "having a good time".
The songs by Deff Leppard, Guns and Roses, Twisted Sister, White Snake, Bon Jovi, Foreigner, Poison among other 80s rock anthem features in the film and are executed brilliantly with a neat direction.
If you are a fan of metal rock, why not watch! Rock will go on for Ages.
