Crass, cheap, explicit… That’s what defines RASCALS!

By Priyanka Ketkar

When the synonym for "funny" becomes "cheap" and the hero aged 60 starts running behind girls who are probably his daughter's age, you don't really have to guess what the movie would be like. RASCALS the latest DAVID DHAWAN comedy on the Bollywood horizon is one such crass, cheap comedy of an old and a middle-aged guy.

Two con men- Chetan (Sanjay Dutt) and Bhagat (Ajay Devgn) rob a wealthy goon Anthony (Arjun Rampal) and come to Bangkok to celebrate their successful thefts. Of course, they are not friends; in fact, they end up becoming arch rivals. Both of them keep trying to outwit the other one and that too for a girl Khushi (Kangana Ranaut). They cheat, they lie, the steal, they do everything but I am not really sure if they are after her money or the honey herself. Anyway, when both top stars are after a single star in a movie, then it becomes pretty obvious that neither of them is going to get the girl. Although it won't make much difference in anyone's lives by knowing the answers to why, how, when etc., still, if you want to know what exactly happens in the movie, you have to watch it (just don't say I didn't warn you).

Ajay Devgn and Satish Kaushik are the only two who have managed to pull off some funny scenes. Sanjay Dutt is not at all impressive and his Munna Bhai effect seems to either be working only with Arshad Warsi, or it must've worn-off. Kangana Ranaut is just bad. She has poor dialogue delivery and she absolutely cannot act. Chunkey Pandey was decent. Lisa Hayden cannot act but she isn't expected to act either, she has to look hot and add glamour, which she does. Arjun Rampal has a very small role but he has done a convincing job. Overall, the star cast seems to be not trying hard enough to be convincing. The music in the movie is passable.

The movie is extremely slow and stretched. There is an excessive and unnecessary skin show. The dialogues incline to taking cheap digs and insulting comments; they almost sound offensive. There are a few launghs here and there, but overall, even though the movie is much better than the past few "comic" movies like Chatur Singh, Tere Mere Phere, Double Dhamaal and its likes, it is still irritating and a sheer waste of time.
