Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal who is highly acclaimed for his unique filmmaking style is planning to revive his ambitious project "Chamki Chameli" that has been in the pipeline for over 6 years now. The film is based on Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen" but will be created to suit Indian sensibilities.
It is a story of a woman who destroys many men’s lives. When the idea originally was conceptualized by Shyam he struggled to find a producer to finance the film which is expected to be made on a huge budget. Later he was unable to find an actress who could don such a demanding role. But now that he is reviving the project, he is toying with some of the biggest names of the industry today. The front runners in the race to bag the coveted role are Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan.
The veteran filmmaker however refused to divulge any details and assured that he would announce when he finalizes everything. “I am keen to revive "Chamki Chameli" but nothing is decided yet. I am in the midst of everything and would make a formal announcement only when the time is right” said Shyam.
