WarGames remake to be more real'

(Cover) - EN Movies - Seth Gordon has promised his remake of cult 80s thriller WarGames will be "a lot more real".

The director, who is best known for his acclaimed comedy documentary King of Kong, will be working on more serious fare after signing on to helm the remake of WarGames. The 1983 original saw Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy play two teenage hackers who unwittingly come close to starting a nuclear attack between Russia and America.

There has already been a straight-to-DVD sequel in 2008, but now MGM want to release a big screen remake.

"I love the original," Seth told Collider.com. "I'm a bit of a hacker fanatic, and know a fair bit about that industry and cyber crime and cyber warfare. I have a real point-of-view on the material and how things have changed. It's a much more complicated, nuanced, political world we're in, and I think that actually makes for a more interesting plot to tell. Frankly, cyber attack is a lot more real."

Remaking classic films from the 80s isn't a new thing in Hollywood. But Seth knows the majority of them are shunned by both critics and fans of the original, and he's desperate to prove this will be a worthy remake by taking his time making the movie.

"That's a big project, and I'm going to be focusing on it immediately, but not exclusively," he explained. "It will take a long time cause we have to write it and then cast it. It's a lot of steps. I'm hoping to get that going, and also sneak a smaller film, in between."

Seth Gordon's next film is the forthcoming Jennifer Aniston comedy Horrible Bosses. (C) Cover Media
