Anne Hathaway: One Day accent was daunting

19th August 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Anne Hathaway has compared perfecting her Yorkshire accent for One Day to donning an ill-fitting gown "on a really big occasion".

The American actress plays Emma Morley in the highly-anticipated romantic movie opposite Jim Sturgess, who portrays Emma's best friend Dexter Mayhew.

The film is based on the best-selling book by David Nicholls and follows the pair on the same day over 20 years.

Anne's character is from the north of England, and so the film sees her talking with a Yorkshire twang.

The stunning star says the accent wasn't at all easy to grasp.

"[It was like] a spiky, fanged, angry little thing," she said of the challenging task. "[It was like] wearing a dress that doesn't fit on a really big occasion and you know you can't fidget."

Anne has starred in a number of big studio movies, including Alice in Wonderland, Valentine's Day and Bride Wars. The brunette beauty has also appeared in successful independent films such as Rachel Getting Married and Brokeback Mountain.

Anne keeps an open mind when it comes to accepting film roles.

"I try to find a balance between indie flicks and more commercial movies", she told USA Today. "Sometimes the best opportunity comes in the form of a really silly comedy, and sometimes it comes in a really intense dramatic performance. Emma was the deepest, most nuanced character that I've encountered since Kim in Rachel Getting Married."

Anne is becoming Catwoman in the highly-anticipated The Dark Night Rises. The 28-year-old star is preparing for a barrage of exposure from the coveted role.

"I was walking down the street the other day in Pittsburgh, and some frat boys just started screaming 'Catwoman!'" she laughed. "And I was just like, 'Oh, God, here it comes.'" (C) Cover Media
