Deryck Whibley: Album was an accident

7th April 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Deryck Whibley says penning Sum 41s new album was an accident.

The 31-year-old musician is guitarist and lead vocalist of the Canadian rock group. Their fifth studio album Screaming Bloody Murder was released last month, three years since their last record Underclass Hero.

Deryck never intended to write an album, he simply jotted down lyrics as he went along. After flicking through a number of ideas on a Dictaphone, he realised the band had more than enough material to make an LP.

I never felt like I was doing an album, [even though] I actually was. I never sat down with the intention of writing a song. I never felt like I had to pick up the guitar, I just did, he told Kerrang! magazine. The only time Id write a song was when I was struck by an idea in a conversation and Id throw it down, but then I wouldnt listen to it again for another year or two. Finding those songs again and recording them was the biggest shock to me. At the end I realised, Oh, Ive made a record.

Despite all their time away from the spotlight, Sum 41 comprising of Deryck, Jason McCaslin on bass guitar, Steve Jocz on drums and Tom Thacker on lead guitar - have become far more in-demand than ever before. The singer says their tours have been a roaring success across the globe.

The band feels bigger and better than before. We sell out tours quicker than when we were doing Fat Lip. I realised, Dont think about anything, just roll with it, he explained. The band is happening without anybody really doing anything. We never really cared, all we knew was that one day it was going to work out. And now it has. (C) Cover Media
