Emma Watson feels loyalty to roles

8th October 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Emma Watson says a "sense of responsibility" dictates which movie roles she takes.

Growing up on screen as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise means people are keen to see what Emma will go on to next. She's wants to please her fans, so thinks carefully before committing to any project.

"Natalie Portman is incredible. She's dealt gracefully with being famous from a young age and has made really interesting choices. But I'm realising I am in a very different position to her. Harry Potter is an entity unto itself," she explained to the November edition of UK magazine Elle. "I mean, her debut was in Leon so she's been playing controversial roles all her life, while something like Black Swan would be a stark contrast for me. Although I wouldn't let fear of what people might think dictate the films I make in the future, I do feel a sense of responsibility I've been incredibly fortunate and I don't want to let anyone down, I suppose."

Emma portrays Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is due out next year. Sam is a fun-loving party girl and the movie is about a shy student who records his experiences while at school. It explores drug abuse and depression and Emma was gripped when she read the script.

"Free handbags are lovely, but that's not what I see as the benefits of being famous. It means I can do things I really care about, like this film, which might not have been made otherwise," she said. "Being a teenager is quite lonely, particularly for my generation. There's a sense of people being cut off and in isolation. And when I read the script, it just made me feel less alone." (C) Cover Media
