Sofia Coppola discusses legendary LA hotel

29th December 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Sofia Coppola decided to set her new movie in Los Angeles hotel Chateau Marmont because it is a legendary place.

The directors latest big screen outing is called Somewhere and stars Stephen Dorff. In the film, the Hollywood hunk plays hell raiser Johnny Marco - an unstable Hollywood star who is forced to re-evaluate his life when his 11-year-old daughter unexpectedly visits him.

The famously decadent Chateau Marmont has been a favourite among celebrities for years, with famous faces including Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, Scarlett Johansson, Vivien Leigh and Lindsay Lohan frequenting the venue. Sofia knew it was the perfect place to set her new film as it is so closely associated with the celebrity world.

Theres something about it, the filmmaker told Marie Claire. There are just so many stories, so much history. Its just one of those legendary places in LA.

Sofia felt inspired to write the script for Somewhere shortly after the birth of her and musician Thomas Mars first child, a daughter called Romy, in 2006. She has denied she based the character of Johnny on any one famous face, insisting she sought ideas from a variety of places.

It was the first thing I wrote after our daughter was born. I was thinking about the impact that has it changes your priorities, she explained. [Johnny] is based on a dozen people people I know and stories Ive heard. (C) Cover Media
