Tim Gunn: Meryl Streep could look better

13th August 2010

(Cover) - EN Fashion - Tim Gunn wants to “have a talk” with Meryl Streep, because he thinks she makes no effort with her clothes.

The fashion consultant is known for being a mentor on American design show Project Runway. He loves everything about fashion, and enjoys seeing what celebrities wear to red carpet events. While most of them get it right, Tim thinks there are a few who could do a lot better.

“I would love to have a chat with Meryl Streep about the semiotics of clothes. I love Meryl Streep, I am an unbridled fan, but I think she believes she's too smart for fashion. That it’s not something she should be addressing intellectually,” he said.

“Let’s have a talk Meryl, because I believe with her fabulous figure and gorgeous shape and who she is in the world she can do a little better. It’s all about silhouette shape.”

Tim is impressed by Lady Gaga’s style, but says she shouldn’t be thought of as a fashion icon. She is well known for her flamboyant outfits, and is regularly seen out in towering platforms and just her underwear. Tim says no one should aspire to dress like Gaga as her clothing is costume, not fashion.

“I have the greatest respect for Lady Gaga, the world is a better place for her talents. However, she should be in no one's fashion vocabulary. She does not wear clothes, she wears costumes. If she has a favourite designer it has to be Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus,” he told Extra TV.

Cameron Diaz does get the Tim seal of approval. He loves that she experiments with clothes, particularly as she sometimes gets her choices wrong. Tim insists that is the mark of someone who is a “risk taker”, adding no one wears a mini skirt like Cameron.

The eighth season of Project Runway recently launched, and Tim says it is like no other. The designers and much more fragile this time round, something which has had an effect on their mentor.

“We have a bunch of rare, hothouse flowers. Their fashion is wonderful, but they have the stamina and the wherewithal of an orchid in the Arctic,” he said.

“This group needed a lot of bandage rolling a lot of hand holding a lot of tears were shed and I was blotting them up. It took its toll on me. But they’re incredibly talented, just fragile.” (C) Cover Media
