28th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - The candidates for the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion award have been revealed, featuring a strong number of English language pictures.

The prestigious Italian movie event takes place annually, and this year's 68th edition is scheduled to run from August 31 to September 10.

A total of 21 movies will compete for the coveted Golden Lion honour, which is given to the best movie screened during the festivities.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, a thriller which stars Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, features in the line up, as does comedy Carnage, the latest picture by Roman Polanski which has performances by Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz. Other titles vying for the prize include Andrea Arnold's adaptation of Emily Bront's period novel Wuthering Heights and drama A Dangerous Method, which boasts an A-list cast including Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley and Michael Fassbender. The movie studies the strong relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, exploring the birth of psychoanalysis.

As had previously been announced, the festival will open with George Clooney's political drama The Ides of March, which is also in the competition.

Madonna's romantic drama W.E will premiere at the festival, although it will not compete for the Golden Lion prize. The picture stars emergent talent including Britain's Andrea Riseborough, as well as more established names such as Abbie Cornish. Helmed by the pop star, it recounts the relationship between King Edward VIII and US divorce Wallis Simpson.
