Hilary Swank shines light on legal system

6th January 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Hilary Swank hopes her new movie will shine a bright light on people who are wrongly convicted of crimes.

The actress appears in Conviction, which tells the real-life story of Betty Anne Waters a working mother who studied for a law degree after her brother was wrongfully convicted of murder. Hilary felt a connection to the tale as she got to know Betty Anne, who she portrays, very well while shooting. She hopes the subject matter will encourage people to think about the US legal system, and those falsely accused of crimes.

I have a friend whos an exoneree. Thats something Ive always known about, theres definitely flaws [in the system], she explained. Hopefully this movie will shine a bright light on that as well, and help other people who are in prison right now, wrongfully committed, get free.

Sam Rockwell portrays Betty Annes brother Kenny, and has been praised for how well he mimics the mans mannerisms and voice. He is proud of the finished movie, as he worked hard to ensure he was as believable as possible.

I had audio tapes of his voice talking to his lawyers from the case at the time. A lot of the stories that they told us showed what a big-hearted guy he was, and how childlike, he told Sky News. He would do things like streaking, he was the life of the party. (C) Cover Media
